At Achilles and the Tortoise, every hoodie, crewneck, and tee tells a story — one that begins long before it reaches your wardrobe. We believe transparency is part of sustainability, so today we're pulling back the curtain on exactly how our garments are made, and why every decision in our supply chain matters.
Why Portugal?
Our production home is Barcelos, a textile town in northern Portugal with centuries of craftsmanship heritage. Choosing EU production wasn't just a values decision — it was a practical one. Shorter supply chains mean lower transport emissions, faster quality control, and the ability to build real relationships with the people making your clothes. We visit our production partners regularly, and we know the names of the people behind the machines.
Producing in Portugal also means full compliance with EU labour standards — fair wages, safe working conditions, and no shortcuts. When you wear an Achilles and the Tortoise piece, you're wearing something made by skilled workers who are treated with dignity.
The Materials: Certified from the Ground Up
Our sustainable streetwear starts with the right raw materials. We use two primary fabric inputs:
- OCS Certified Organic Cotton — grown without synthetic pesticides or GMOs, verified by the Organic Content Standard.
- GRS Certified Recycled Cotton — post-industrial and post-consumer cotton waste, diverted from landfill and given a second life. Verified by the Global Recycled Standard.
No synthetics. No plastics. No chemicals. Our organic cotton Tees, Long Sleeves, Hoodies and crewnecks are built to last — and when they eventually reach end-of-life, they can re-enter the material cycle rather than ending up in a landfill. But where they to end up in a landfill or worse - nature - they can decompose without hurting its surroundings.
Colour Without Compromise: EarthColors®
Conventional textile dyeing is one of the most polluting processes in fashion. We use EarthColors® and algae — circular, natural dyes derived from agricultural waste like walnut shells, rosemary, and other plant by-products. Combined with water-based silkscreen printing for our graphics, our colour process dramatically reduces water consumption and eliminates toxic chemical runoff.
The result? Rich, earthy tones that age beautifully — and a clear conscience.
Ethically Made in Portugal: What That Actually Means
"Ethically made in Portugal" is a phrase we use carefully. Here's what it means in practice:
- Full traceability from raw fibre to finished garment
- EU-regulated labour conditions throughout the supply chain
- No outsourcing to unverified subcontractors
- Regular on-site visits and quality audits
- A lifetime warranty on every piece — because we stand behind what we make
Recycled Cotton Streetwear: The Case for Circularity
Fast fashion operates on a linear model: make, sell, discard. We're building something different. Our use of recycled cotton inputs is part of a broader commitment to circular design — creating garments that are durable, repairable, and ultimately recyclable.
Our lifetime warranty isn't a marketing gimmick. It's a structural commitment to keeping garments in use longer, reducing the demand for new production, and shifting the economics of fashion toward quality over quantity.
What's Next
We're continuously evaluating new material innovations and production improvements. The past year is one for the books. We are so excited to start sharing what we've been working on this past year. We dream big, and it involves the development of a plant that you probably hate right now. But will love once you've talked with us or read or seen what we're about to share. It's EPIC! Sustainability isn't a destination — it's a practice. And we're committed to sharing the journey with you, honestly and openly.
Questions about our production process or certifications? Reach out — we love talking about this stuff.
